Professor Pedro Saint Maurice

Professor Saint-Maurice is a well-recognised international leader/expert in Epidemiology with an outstanding track record in examining the impact of physical activity on chronic diseases, principally cancer where his research has impacted the current US physical activity guidelines for adults.

Professor Saint-Maurice previously held the position of Research Fellow at the National Institute of Health (NIH) - National Cancer Institute USA and holds a research track record that includes 111 journal articles including 1st authorship in JAMA, (IF 63.1), JAMA Internal Medicine (IF 22.3), and JAMA Network Open (IF 10.5), demonstrating a superior capability to lead research and publish in the most prominent international medical journals. In addition to his current position of Principal Investigator at the Champalimaud Foundation, Portugal (a world leader in biomedical sciences and cancer) where he leads the Physical Activity and Quality of Life lab, Professor Saint-Maurice is the President of the International Society for Diet and Activity Methods as well as an Associate Editor for the Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise (the flagship journal of the American College of Sports Medicine), an Associate Editor for the Journal for the Measurement of Physical Behavior, and is also the Leading Editor of the special issue “Movement-related Digital Biomarkers, Endpoints & Clinical Outcome Assessments” in the Journal for the Measurement of Physical Behaviour. More recently Professor Saint-Maurice led the organising and scientific committee of the 2025 Moving Beyond scientific conference in Portugal, which focused on the role of physical activity on cancer prevention, treatment, and survivorship with attendance from 21 countries and approximately 400 attendees.

Professor Saint-Mauricehas been invited to present at many national and international scientific meetings, most notably Symposiums at The American College of Sports Medicine annual meetings (2018, 2019, 2020, 2022) and the American Society for Preventative Oncology annual meeting (2021). He has also received many awards in his career to date including National Institutes of Health (NIH) – Stadtman Investigator Finalist (2023), National Institutes of Health Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics –Award for Outstanding Research Paper (2023): ‘Estimated number of deaths prevented through increases in physical activity among US adults’ published in JAMA Int Med, (2022).

Of the 111 journal articles published by Professor Saint-Maurice, they have been cited 5727 times with an average FWCI of 2.78 and a h-index of 37 with 80% of publications in Q1 journals. Professor Saint-Maurice is also a Reviewer for a range of distinguished Journals in the clinical field of oncology, general medicine and exercise medicine including JAMA, JAMA Internal Medicine, British Medical Journal, and Journal of Applied Physiology.
