Visiting Fellows from University of Jyvaskyla hosted by Institute

Professor Robert Newton has played host to Professor Keijo Häkkinen and Professor Arja Häkkinen from the University of Jyvaskyla in Finland.

Professor Keijo Häkkinen is recognised internationally as a leader in the field of exercise and sports science with postgraduate degrees in exercise physiology and biomechanics. His research is predominantly in the field of exercise, health and the biology of physical activity.

Professor Arja Häkkinen is a leading researcher in exercise Medicine with a background in public health, exercise physiology, physiotherapy, gerontology and clinical research. Her research focuses on the application of physical activity and exercise for the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of diseases and disabilities including metabolic syndrome and physical activity, muscle tone and health technology research, and physical activity and therapeutic exercise in rheumatoid arthritis patients.

During their visit, both Professors had the opportunity to present to ECU Researchers and staff. Professor Keijo Hakkinen’s discussed how, “Systematic strength training can induce large neuromuscular adaptations in aging men and women and Professor Arja Hakkinen discussed, “Why exercise is important in musculoskeletal diseases.”
