Conference season coming up

The second half of the year is always busy with conference attendance. Our researchers will be kept busy this year, though thankfully, this year many are being hosted in Perth!

The Sports Medicine Australia Conference will be held in Perth – what a way to kick off from our home base at Edith Cowan University! Our team will be featured throughout the conference with presentations and posters on a number of sport safety topics, including:

  • Sally Bromley, PhD Candidate - Between a rock and a hard place: A need for combat sport organisations to make injury prevention a priority
  • Professor Ken Nosaka - Water intake after dehydration makes muscles more susceptible to cramp
  • Dr Lauren Fortington - Knowledge of automated external defibrillators (AED) among Victorian community sports clubs/facilities in an AED provision program
  • Mr Liam Toohey, PhD Candidate/research assistant - Paddling through the unknown: A 3-year prospective study investigating injury in elite sprint kayak
  • Prasanna Gamage, PhD Candidate - Match injuries among junior male cricketers in Sri Lanka
  • Geordie McLeod, PhD Candidate - Cricket injuries in community level players.

In addition, our colleagues in the Exercise Medicine Research Institute will be sharing their expertise in a symposium and workshop on the topic of exercise in people with cancer.

The closing keynote presentation for the conference will be on Saturday, October 13, 2:00 PM - 3:00, delivered by our own Professor Caroline Finch.

We also have the following presentations at national and international conferences coming up:

  • Professor Finch to speak at the Perth Safety Symposium. SafetyX: Improving Health and Safety across the generations Personalising safety – reflections on sports injury prevention on the 28 September 2018, Perth, WA
  • At the Inaugural Sri Lankan Sports and Exercise Medicine Conference, Professor Finch will give a keynote lecture and workshop on the topic of “prevention, mission possible? Why is it important prevent injuries” The conference is to be held from 6-9 September in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Our PhD scholar Mr Prasanna Gamage will also be presenting results from three of his PhD projects at the conference on the topics of injury and heat illness in junior cricketers
  • The Australasian Epidemiology Association 2018 Conference is also being held locally this year, in Fremantle. Dr Fortington will be presenting her work “What can existing data tell us about Australian sport fatalities? The conference is 22-24 October.
  • Dr Fortington will be travelling to the International Collaborative Effort on Injury Statistics and Methodology meeting to present “Subsequent injury classification - a revised framework for sports injury.” The meeting takes place from 2-4 November in Hanoi, Vietnam
  • “Are sport related fatalities identifiable from existing data sources?” will be presented by Dr Fortington at the World Safety Conference to be held 5-7 November in Bangkok, Thailand.
  • Rounding out a busy year for sports injury research presentations, Professor Finch will present a keynote lecture at the International Conference of Strength Training, hosted by ECU. Her title is “Injury Perspectives: incorporating strength training approaches into implementable injury prevention practices”. The conference is from 30 November-3 December in Perth.
